What is a Barndominium

Barndominium Floor Plans with Various Type Size and Concept

Let’s start with the name. Barndominium comes from ‘barn’ and ‘condominium.’ as the name implies, it is a combination of both. It is an interesting and unique combination of two opposing worlds.

Basically, a barndominium is a barn with its inside remodeled. In most cases, the inside just looks like the interior of a condominium.

That being said, a barndominium is not limited to that kind of design, though. Some owners also transform their barndominium into a garage, a shop, a meeting center, and even a church.

The trend of barndominium started back in 2016. There are three main reasons why barndominium has become increasingly popular even today. These are the reasons why:

  • It is inexpensive and affordable.
  • It still requires maintenance but not as much as a house or condominium requires.
  • It is relatively efficient in energy consumption compared to a conventional house

What You Can Do with a Barndominium

Although barndominium comes from ‘barn’ + ‘condominium’ it doesn’t have to be limited to housing functions only. On the contrary, barndominium can serve multiple purposes depending on the owner’s needs and wants.
Alright, so what kind of purposes a barndominium can serve? Think of barndominium as renovating an old house (or, in this case, it is a barn rather than an old house) so that it can look more sophisticated and stylish.

Again, with barndominium, you have a lot of options besides housing. Here are some examples of purposes a barndominium can serve.

  • A garage or a shop with large enough space to be used as living quarters.
  • A meeting or co-working space.
  • An entertainment area, where you can spend your time with your family members, closest friends, colleagues as well as associates.
  • A church (or any other praying place, for that matter).

As you can see, there are multiple ways you can utilize a barndominium. Now, the question is, can you bring amenities that are common in a house to this repurposed barn? Yes, you can.

You can bring amenities such as air conditioners, showers, hot tubs, ceiling fans, hardwood floors, and even granite countertops into the barndominium.
Some amenities, such as showers are a must. This is especially true if you are planning to stay in the barndominium for a while. Air conditioning units and ceiling fans are a must as well.

They will help you withstand the heat of summer. Hardwood floors and hot tubs are luxuries to have. They are great additions albeit not as important as showers, air conditioner, and ceiling fans.

Building a Barndominium

Is it hard to build one? Not necessarily. There are many barndominium builders who can help you build one for you. What about the cost?

Building a barndominium is relatively affordable and even more economical compared to a conventional house. Not only that, a barndominium also offers spacious living quarters, which is another good reason to build a barndominium.
In general, barndominiums are built in areas where there are greeneries. Although it is not a must, it is certainly a nice thing to have. What is a must? You must have a floor plan.

A floor plan is necessary as it is the draft of how the inside of a barndominium will look like. It can also serve as a guide on how you can utilize the available space. So, before you build a barndominium, be sure that you have at least a floor plan beforehand.
