How To Motivate Yourself To Make Decisions Quickly

An inherent weakness that we all have, in both our personal and career lives, is S-L-O-W decision making. You know you need to do something, but for unknown reasons, you procrastinate. Maybe it is less painful not to do something than it is to do it. Perhaps it is like a menu in a restaurant with too many choices and you can not decide on what to select. Perhaps you are afraid of hearing the word “no”, and so you never do what needs to be accomplished.

Whatever the reason, the facts show that people fail because of the lack of deciding to do something, WHEN it should be done. Those that are most successful in any endeavor are those who are quick to grasp opportunities by making quick decisions.

I once worked with a man I will call “Ted”, who was always late for EVERYTHING — work, meetings, deadlines for presentations and of course, making decisions. I even joked with him that he would be late for his own funeral. And here is the ironic part — “Ted” set his watch 15 minutes ahead to make sure that he was on time, and he WAS STILL CONSISTENTLY LATE!

Emotional Intelligence For Greater Success

Recall the opening scene in the blockbuster movie, Forrest Gump – a feather floating in the wind, up and down and all around with no control or sense of direction whatsoever. I would argue that many business people feel that awful feeling of being powerless, being blown around by the latest change of which they have no power, influence or sense of control. Helpless. It is not a good feeling.

Later in the movie, as Forrest’s son is about to leave for his first day of school, he asks his father a thought-provoking question: “Is life like a feather (I’m powerless over many events which affect me) or do I have destiny (I can set goals, and purposefully move toward them)?” Forrest’s answer: “ I guess it’s just a little bit of both, son.” Isn’t it?

Stuff Happens, says the cleaned-up version of the famous bumper sticker. Yet, 10% of success is what happens to you -90% of success is what you DO with what happens to you. In other words, do you respond or react? Do you quit, or get up and try again? Are you a golf club thrower, or do you recoup quickly? Do you let your feelings of resentment or anger get the best of you, or are you as cool as a cucumber in a crisis? Do you say things that you later regret? Or, when attacked, respond with calmly spoken, kind words, and perhaps make the other person regret their attack?

IQ or EQ?
Emotional Intelligence, sometimes abbreviated EI or EQ, in a takeoff of IQ, has become a hot management leadership consulting area in the last two years. Emotional skills have replaced experience and IQ or intelligence as the most important markers of personal success. EI is rooted in the belief that success is only partly explained by IQ, or one’s intellect. More important is how one behaves in response to events, and how well they interact with people.

The Key to Long-Term Success

Successful people have been studied in depth for more than 100 years. They have been interviewed extensively to determine what it is they do and how they think that enables them to accomplish so much more than the average person.

The Harvard Discovery on Success
In 1970, sociologist Dr. Edward Banfield of Harvard University wrote a book entitled The Unheavenly City. He described one of the most profound studies on success and priority setting ever conducted.

Banfield’s goal was to find out how and why some people became financially independent during the course of their working lifetimes. He started off convinced that the answer to this question would be found in factors such as family background, education, intelligence, influential contacts, or some other concrete factor. What he finally discovered was that the major reason for success in life was a particular attitude of mind.

Develop Long Time Perspective
Banfield called this attitude “long time perspective.” He said that men and women who were the most successful in life and the most likely to move up economically were those who took the future into consideration with every decision they made in the present. He found that the longer the period of time a person took into consideration while planning and acting, the more likely it was that he would achieve greatly during his career.

Personal Time Management: Is it Time to Stop and Evaluate Where You’re Headed?

Are you really struggling with time management? I mean really struggling. The kind of struggling that ends up in extreme stress because you’re missing deadlines, losing important pieces of information, scheduling yourself to the point you don’t have a free 15 minute period in your day. I can’t tell you how many of my clients find themselves in this very situation. They’re so time stressed they’re about ready to crack, and they think it’s all about finding some technique or trick so they can do even more. If this sounds like you I want you to stop whatever you’re doing right now because I know you’re doing something else while you’re reading this, get a refreshment, come back, and do absolutely nothing else while you read this article.

This is the personal time management message you need to read. You’ve created a life, a business, a career that you can’t live in. Unless you admit that now and make a commitment to yourself here and now to change your direction, you’re like a freight train headed for a concrete wall. It will be a devastating experience when the impact hits and your world crumbles around you, but it doesn’t have to be that way. If you’re reading this before your train wreck you’ve got time to make the changes you need to make to keep this from happening to you.
