5 Money Origami Tricks: Great Ways To Leave A Tip

I was over at a Japanese friend’s house the other night and he started to show me how to make origami with Japanese money. We were having a great time when he said, “The only problem is that there is no tipping in Japan. When I was In the US, I would fold the dollar bills there and leave them as tips. It was so much fun watching the waitresses when they went to gather the tips. I miss doing that.”
That’s when it occurred to me that it really would be fun to leave your tips as origami. At the very least you would leave an impression and likely the people at the restaurant would remember you from that day forward whenever you came in. So here are five origami that should leave a lasting impression when you leave a tip:
#5 Shirt:

#4 Bow Tie

You need five $1 bills to make this origami. Here are the directions to make the Spider
#2 Rosette

#1 Accordion (pleated) Dollar
I couldn’t find the design or someone folding it, but this was just too cool not to place as number one. The design comes from the book “Origami to Astonish and Amuse” which you can pick up for under $10 at Amazon and is probably available at your public library. I have heard it’s an excellent source if you would like to leave even more amazing origami shapes and figures as tips. Take the time to learn how to fold a dollar bill in a few different ways and it will make leaving a tip at the restaurant an enjoyable part of the meal.

Not one great idea, but five!! Wow! Don’t like the spider though… ICK! The poor waiter would probably swat it rather than pick it up! Well, maybe if you didn’t like the service, then it would be appropriate! LOL! I love it! Thanks!

the spider is awesome, but I not even gonna try it - too hard. in my case - waste of money
It’s a unique idea, but would certainly take some to actually make some of those shapes - I guess you would have to have them pre-made. Certainly wouldn’t work in Australia as we have plastic bank notes!

I love the spider, in fact I am sure even if you left a $100 tip that was turned into an origami spider - they will let destroy it - might smack it with a newspaper, or wine bottle.
My favorite is the spider, but I don’t know if I wanna stay at the restaurant that long after I eat to fold it =p. The shirt is cute and very easy to make, I left a 5 dollar tip at a Denny’s and the waitress came out and asked how I did it and we actually sat down and I showed her how to fold it. Great way to pick up girls if you play it right. Great post man thanks for adding it.

The spider is cute, it is not as hard to make as it looks like. You just need to fold note tight in the first step and the rest would be quite straight forward.
When I was in elementary or middle school, some kids use to make a ring out of a dollar bill. That was neat as well.

I have learned how to do the bow tie fold. Very fun way to leave a tip. I did not realize there is no tipping in Japan.
Actually, this is a pretty crappy way to leave tips. I was a waitress in college and hated when cheap guys would leave a single dollar folded into some design. That doesn’t change the fact that you only left a dollar.
I love the shirt made out of a dollar bill. Cool stuff and it jumps right off the page at me.

Has anyone seen the work of Paul Jackson? Truly amazing sculptures from paper, he really does this 1000 year old art form justice. Ive spent the last week practicing numerous sculptures, the hardest by far is that spider you’ve posted
